New funding for suicide prevention
13th June 2018
SAMH welcomes the announcement today of significant new funding for suicide prevention in Scotland.
Earlier today, the Scottish Government announced a £3 million innovation fund to support a new suicide prevention leadership group.
At the end of April, SAMH responded to the Suicide Prevention Action Plan consultation seeking a stronger, more specific and clearly resourced plan to take Scotland forward.
An average of two people die by suicide every day in Scotland, that’s 728 deaths in the last year.
SAMH Chief Executive, Billy Watson said:
“SAMH welcomes the extra funding announced by the Scottish Government today for suicide prevention in Scotland.
“Whilst we don’t know the detail of the innovation fund at this stage; this level of investment gives an opportunity to work proactively to reduce the number of people who die by suicide in Scotland.
“We look forward to seeing the Scottish Government’s final Suicide Prevention Action Plan and hope it will reflect many of SAMH’s key asks as outlined in our response.”
