Research Reports

All of our research reports help to inform our SAMH’s Views and are based on the experiences of people directly affected by the issues we are talking about.

Mental Health Support

Everyone has a right to access care and treatment for their mental health. Read our research reports into people’s experiences of different treatments and support services for mental ill-health:

  • ‘Decisions were made about me not with me’: a SAMH research report on treatment and support for depression (2020)
  • Going to Be Well Trained: a SAMH survey on school staff training in mental health (2017)

Promoting Good Mental Health

We know that some things are good for mental health such as physical activity, financial security and engaging in ‘good’ employment. However, SAMH’s research shows that people with mental health problems often face barriers to accessing the things that help people stay mentally healthy:

  • ‘It was a confusion’ – Universal Credit and mental health: recommendations for change (2020)
  • Individual Placement and Support Programme – Economic Impact Assessment (2017)
  • Personal Independence Payment – what’s the problem?: a SAMH report on Personal Independence Payment and mental health (2016)
  • Worried Sick: experiences of poverty and mental health across Scotland (2014)

Inclusion, Participation and Rights

People with mental health problems often face stigma and discrimination, which can prevent them from accessing their rights on an equal basis and participating in society fully. Read our research into people’s experiences of accessing their rights and participating in society:

  • The Right Road?: making diversion work for people with mental health problems (2014)
