Hi! My name is Alex and I am in S5. I chose to join the SAMH Young People’s Panel to help raise awareness on mental health in Scotland, and help to remove the sigma that surrounds it. There are so many aspects of mental health, and I would love to play a part in improving services and facilities across Scotland for those who need it. Additionally, I am keen to learn more about mental health and the ways in which it can impact people, as well as help to further educate people around Scotland on mental health and wellbeing. One of my favourite things is making music - I play the violin and the drums! I am also an avid football fan and love watching and going to games. Read more

Cameron
Hi, I’m Cameron! I am a 21-year-old Psychology undergraduate. I have experienced mental health issues and have worked in social & health care for almost 4 years. I’ve been working with SAMH since October 2023; when I heard they were creating a youth panel, I was immediately interested. I’ve worked with several organisations in the private and public sectors, and SAMH is by far the more inclusive, driven and impactful. I look forward to a rewarding time working with a diverse team of young people from every corner of Scotland. I see a need for better access to mental health care. By investing in mental health interventions in school, most young people across Scotland can benefit from help in their day-to-day lives.

I have spent time in volunteer support work with children with additional support needs. I have also supported unaccompanied child asylum seekers as they integrate into the community. These experiences have given me insight into the state of mental health support, and a desire to enact change. I have, through membership of the Scottish Youth Parliament, developed the confidence to put forward ideas. I hope to use these skills and experiences to provide valuable contribution to the panel. Young People's Panel - Member
Keaton lives in Fife and has a keen interest in Politics, history and film. His strengths are drawn from his neurodiversity as he may not follow the usual paths, and can see possibilities that others miss. He was Vice Captain in his last year of primary school and has championed many causes throughout school with openness, enthusiasm and lots of humour. He has a passion for social justice and how this impacts on mental wellbeing. He exhibits a sunny disposition and can connect with both young and old. Keaton has a natural instinct for knowing when someone needs help and support. Having faced many challenges during school, where the education system isn’t set up to support pupils like him, he has had to develop the ability to advocate for himself, and as such wants to use this skill to advocate for others. From this favourite film, The Shawshank Redemption “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” Read more
